Once again, Spokane city leadership absent during time of need

Spokane Mayor Mary Verner toured the flood damage in Spokane's Peaceful Valley neighborhood Thursday, promising to help neighbors with sandbags and any other assistance. But when asked why it took days for the city to respond, and public pressure for the city to help out with the sandbags few neighbors needed, the mayor said the city just didn't realize the flood waters would be a problem. Sound familiar?

Senator Barack Obama has claimed John McCain is 'losing his bearings.' Other than that, Obama's presidential campaign has said little publicly about McCain's age. But his surrogates have made it an issue, claiming McCain is senile, or suffers from Alzheimer's. But it wasn't McCain who claimed he had been to '57 states.'

Nothing really to Sound Off about here... other than if you have some good wishes for the Spokane Chiefs Hockey Team, now just one win away from the WHL Finals and at home against Tri-City Monday night at the Spokane Arena. There are plenty of tickets left. Chiefs can win the Western Conference Championship with a win. Hope to see you all there- and wearing red. Greg Nickels, the outspoken mayor of Seattle who once warned children Santa was going to die because of global warming, is making more outlandish comments. At a news conference in Seattle on Friday, the mayor was throwing a temper-tantrum, saying he wants secession from the state and country.

The Spokane Chiefs hockey team, which has been playing unbelievably well all season, is in the second round of the playoffs matched up against a tough squad out of Vancouver. Analysts say it's one of the best second-round playoff match-ups in WHL history. And yet Spokane, which has been a hockey town for decades, has apparently turned its back on hockey, the Chiefs and the playoffs.

The Seattle SuperSonics- once a great, respected franchise in the National Basketball Association- is the closest its ever been to leaving the Northwest. The Oklahoman who bought the team with every intention of moving it, is about to do so because he says Seattle and the state of Washington doesn't care. Clay Bennett is right. We don't care about one of the worst products in major league sports history. And we don't care about an organization that, as you'll see below, is basically telling its Seattle fans to buzz off.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi had some harsh words and a warning for America's top military commander in Iraq; don't put a 'shine' on things happening there. Pelosi's words come days before General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker head to Washington to testify on the situation in Iraq. It seems, however, that Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats in the House and Senate have already made up their mind.

Lilacs or lemons for Spokane-CDA Living magazine?

You've probably seen the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene Living magazines on the rack at your favorite grocery stores. If you're able to find your way through the pages upon pages of advertisements, the magazine usually has some great articles about the area and its history. One recurring section is 'Lilacs and Lemons' - a rating system, if you will, on local issues, politicians and even businesses. If someone or something did very well, they get a lilac. Not so well? A lemon. What they did recently makes me want to give them a big fat lemon- with a cherry on top.

Once again, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has showed its worthlessness. Along with the way it ruined the State 'B' basketball tournament here in Spokane by splitting it up, the WIAA is learning first hand how its ruining the other divisions too- and turning its back on the Eastern Washington schools that continue to defy the odds- and the organization.
