Seattle mayor wants his city, area to become its own country

Greg Nickels, the outspoken mayor of Seattle who once warned children Santa was going to die because of global warming, is making more outlandish comments. At a news conference in Seattle on Friday, the mayor was throwing a temper-tantrum, saying he wants secession from the state and country.

Nickels claimed the economy around Seattle makes up 67 percent of the state's economic activity.

"If we were a country, [our economy] would be just a little smaller than Thailand. We would be larger than Colombia, Venezuela. We are held back because our state and federal government still believe our economies are driven by wheat farms and timber logging."

While the mayor's office said the mayor was just expression frustration after the state opposed transportation projects and gun-control legislation he wanted, the mayor did say "I am serious when I say we ought to talk about independence"

"We have rural legislators making decisions on things like the viaduct and whether we can keep our city safe," Nickels said.

This is rich. Of all areas complaining about the amount of control they have over the state, it SHOULDN'T be the Seattle area. Has Seattle forgotten it controls nearly half of the state legislature? Has the Seattle-area forgotten it has more members of the congressional delegation than all other parts of the state, COMBINED?

What’s more? Mr. Nickels, who could also be called Mr. Global Warming for his insistence that everyone change their life to save the planet, admitted at this conference that he has 'no clue' what his public bus number is because he doesn't take the bus. Two other Puget Sound area mayors knew their bus numbers.

Am I the only one who says, "Yes! Please by all means, Seattle... break away from the state and become your own country!?"

This is the first thing I have ever agreed with Mayor Nickels on, but it's a biggie! So please, Seattle... become your own country. Get rid of electricity because of global warming, build for freeways that you'll tear down in years, build more sports stadiums using taxpayer dollars, and declare the mayor King Nickels. The People's Republic of Seattle. Sounds good to me.

What do you think?

Mister Nickels needs to take a chill pill and have a seat.

Most of those companies he gloats over as to adding to the state economy are based in locals outside the Seattle city limits and the ports are owned by King County, not the city. Forgot about that little detail, didn't you Mister Nickels?

And yes Mister Nickels, us "rural" residents should have a voice on your viaduct and other assorted pork barrel projects you want, we have to pay for the thing. The state taxpayers doesn't operate on the method of Seattle saying "gimme gimme gimme" like a spoiled child without any questioning from the people with the check books. Besides here in Spokane, we've been promised a north-south freeway for 50 years and there still isn't enough to pay for it.

Oh, want to solve global warming Nickels? Close that mouth of yours - there's nothing but hot air coming out of it.

So long, farewell, adios, sayonora, aloha, auf wiedersehen, au revoir, ariva dirci, and goodbye...you pompous idiot!

Sounds good to me! Then maybe all the taxes those of us on this side of the state are paying will actually STAY here instead of paying for all of their problems.

No! Why write off an entire great city (we love Seattle!) because of one loud mouth? Besides, our youngest lives there and we don't want to have to use passports to go visit. :-)

Must be the pollution in the city by the sound, causing severe mental incapacitation in the poor Mayor. Seattle is a very beautiful city, too bad a certifiable idiot is running it. I feel sorry for the people of Seattle, must be on drugs to elect someone so mentally unbalanced. He sounds like a meglamaniac, would make an excellent third world dictator or President for Life. Speaks with forked tongue also, tells you what is good for you but lives his life opposite. Send him to Beserkeley in California, Please.
